Local rockstar Lloyd Cole will return to New Mills, where he went to school, for a one-man acoustic performance on August 22. The gig, at New Mills Arts Theatre, is a headline fundraiser act ahead of the New Mills Festival (12-28 September).

Cole, who was born in Buxton and went to New Mills Grammar School, is touring with his ‘career best’ solo album ‘Standards’, which was released in summer 2013. Cole featured as top bill on ‘Later with Jools Holland’ last October and has played to sell-out audiences across Europe ever since.

Classic tracks such as ‘Perfect Skin’, from Cole’s days as part of The Commotions,  feature alongside songs from throughout his solo career.

WHAT THE PAPERS ARE SAYING ABOUT ‘STANDARDS’

“His voice is still beautiful. It sounds like threadbare velvet, stretched but rich at the same time…His lyrics are full of lust and longing, never overly romantic, but enough for you to realise that they come from a deeply complex man.” GodIsInTheTV 13 Nov ’13

“…a rocking, reinvigorated return…terrific” 8/10 UNCUT July ‘13

"...captivating!" 4*  MOJO July ‘13

“effortless craftsmanship from a gifted storyteller.” Q July ‘13

“…a timeless classic.” 5*  Classic Pop July/Aug ’13

“…a little less commotion, but still a legend… just his acoustic guitar and a two-hour set of gorgeous pop songs…”  Bristol Post 6 Nov ‘13

Lloyd Cole and the Commotions sprung to success with their 1984 debut album Rattlesnakes, which contained literary and pop culture references to such figures as Arthur Lee, Norman Mailer, Grace Kelly, Eva Marie Saint, Simone de Beauvoir, Truman Capote, and Joan Didion.

The group produced two more albums, Easy Pieces and Mainstream, before disbanding in 1989, when Cole relocated to New York to record with various artists, including Fred Maher, Robert Quine and Matthew Sweet. He has been a solo singer-songwriter ever since.
